The Illinois Credit Union System recently became a founding sponsor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project with a $5,000 gift to the project’s foundation. It is slated to be built this year.
The memorial to Dr. King will highlight the timeless achievements of a man who had a dream. The mission of the project is to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by leading a collaborative funding, design, and construction process in the creation of a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change.
“We are pleased to support this Memorial Project to help remind future generations of the tireless efforts of Dr. King,” said Dan Plauda, ICUL President/Chief Executive Officer.
Once the Memorial Foundation reaches its goal of raising $100 million, a memorial will be built to honor the life, work and legacy of Dr. King on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The African-American Credit Union Coalition launched a fundraising campaign at last year’s CUNA GAC with a goal of raising $2 million on behalf of national and international credit union organizations. Design and construction costs are roughly $66 million and have already been raised. The remaining $34 million will be divided between three trusts to ensure proper funding for National Park Service maintenance, education programs, and the visitor's center.
