The House on Capitol Hill

Almost five years ago, America’s credit unions received a new political advocacy tool: Credit Union House on Capitol Hill.

Since opening, Credit Union House has surpassed all expectations, attracting over 300 Members of Congress; a number of Congressional staffers; approximately 100 events each year; and most importantly, credit union visitors from all 50 states.

As a movement, we are fortunate to have this facility sending the message that credit unions are here to stay. Illinois credit unions are fortunate to be able to use this facility as a meeting and entertainment facility when conducting Hike the Hills or make other visits to the nation’s capitol.

Credit Union House is a true testament to the cooperative spirit of our movement. Through joint efforts of AACUL, CUNA, the leagues, and individual credit unions, Credit Union House has been successful.

“I believe in Credit Union House and the impact it has made on our advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill,” said Dan Plauda, ICUL President/Chief Executive Officer. “My fellow LLC members- the 50 state credit union leagues and AACUL- also believe strongly in this increased visibility and permanent presence in Washington.”

Noting the need for involvement by all leagues and all credit unions, the LLC members have committed to achieving goals for sustained annual giving in each of our states. In Illinois, our goal is $20,896 per year or just about $50 per credit union. With a variety of contribution levels available, it is easy for your credit union to become involved with Credit Union House- your home away from home on Capitol Hill.

Dollars raised through sustained annual giving are used to cover the costs of escalating property taxes and on-going operational costs that ensure Credit Union House remains the pristine facility it was the day it opened. Please consider making a contribution now and including an on-going contribution to Credit Union House in your annual budget.

Current contributors (through July 1, 2007 as listed in CU House’s 3rd Quarter newsletter) include: CEFCU, Des Plaines Valley Credit Union, Financial Plus Credit Union, Premier Credit Union, Shell Community FCU, South Division Credit Union, Tom DeWitt, Streator Onized Credit Union, and Ukrainian National CU Association

As a testimony to its success, Credit Union House was recently highlighted in the Washington Post Please click here to view the article.
