Credit Union Advocacy

Bohdan Watral, CEO of Selfreliance Ukrainian American FCU (left), had the unique opportunity to pose for this exclusive photo with President George Bush. The photo was taken earlier this year at a fundraising event for Gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka in which the President was the guest speaker. Also pictured is Leo Kazaniwskyj, Legal Counsel for the credit union.

Carl Sorgatz, ICUL Chairman and CEO of Hawthorne CU recently testified before the U.S. House Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee about the impact credit unions can have on their communities through financial literacy efforts. U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) chaired the hearing. The subcommittee also heard from witnesses from NASD, a private-sector regulator of financial services, JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement), the National Endowment on Financial Education, Consumer Federation of America, National Association of Federal Credit Unions, American Bankers Association, and Mortgage Bankers Association.

CUPAC Annual Golf Outing

llinois State Senator Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), credit union supporter and candidate in this year's Illinois State Treasurer's race, spoke to attendees at CUPAC's annual golf outing. She has been the legislator for the 41st Senate district, which most closely represents ICUL's Will County Chapter of Credit Unions, since 1997.

Honoring CU Pioneer

Corporate America CU's President and CEO, Richard Wellner (left), thanks Frank Citro, Sr. for his more than 46 years of service to the credit union movement at an event held recently in his honor. In recognition as one of Illinois' CU pioneers, ICUL provided a resolution highlighting his service, which included starting a credit union for Consolidated Freightways truck drivers in 1960 and eventually running the credit union after his "first" retirement of 31 years of driving. As a capstone in his career, ICUL also inducted Citro into the Illinois CU Hall of Fame in 2001. His most recent position was Business Development Liaison at the credit union's Burbank branch.

Small Asset Size Conference

ICUL President & CEO Dan Plauda kicks off the Small Asset Size conference held at the ICU System Center in August. This year was the 4th annual gathering of this event and had nearly 80 attendees. The conference, which is open to directors and management team members of CUs with less than $20 in assets, featured presentations on national small CU issues, such as the Bank Secrecy Act, collections, payday lending and incentives, as well as plenty of networking opportunities and an appearance by Gubernatorial candidate Judy Baar Topinka.

CUPAC Chairman, Robert Schroeder, takes a breather to pose for this photo with Gubernatorial Candidate Judy Baar Topinka after her remarks at ICUL's Small Asset Size Conference in August. As most CUs are aware, CUPAC, as the bi-partisan political action committee serving Illinois credit unions, analyzed the Illinois Governor's race and recommended support for Treasurer Topinka. This was her fourth such appearance at an ICUL-sponsored event this year.

Quad Cities Chapter Luncheon

CU executives from the Quad Cities and surrounding areas recently held a special chapter luncheon for Phil Hare, Democratic candidate for the 5th Congressional District, most recently occupied by staunch credit union supporter, Lane Evans. ICUL's Illinois Quad Cities, Galesburg, Quincy, Springfield and Greater Decatur chapters are represented by this large Congressional district. Pictured (from left) are: Terry Brahm, Chairman, Members United Corporate Federal CU; Crayton Achelpohl, ICUL League Director, Quincy Chapter; Dennis Hall, ICUL Secretary/ Treasurer and ICUL Director, Illinois Quad Cities Chapter; Terri Buzea, Chairman, Illinois Quad Cities Chapter; Candidate Hare; Ray Rogers, Legislative Forum Representative, Illinois Quad Cities Chapter; Daryl Empen, Chapter Webmaster, Illinois Quad Cities Chapter; and Don Edwards, ICUL SVP of Federal Governmental Affairs.

Unified Homeowners Association of Illinois CU Grand Opening

Teresa Rosado, CEO of the Unified Homeowners Assn. of Illinois Credit Union (at right) addresses staff and guests prior to its grand opening. Located at 3943 N. Western in Chicago, the credit union is the first state chartered credit union in Illinois to open its doors in five years. The CU is chartered to serve members of area childcare provider groups and the Unified Homeowners of Illinois Association. According to Rosado, its mission is to help meet their member's financial needs instead of them having to tap into the equity of their houses, as well as help with credit report/score counseling and financial education. Field staff from ICUL, including Regional Director Joyce Jackson, helped the groups throughout the chartering process.
