Did you know you may have unclaimed property or be the heir to unclaimed property in the State of Illinois?
Each year, the Unclaimed Property Division of the Office of Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, receives the contents of safety deposit boxes that have remained unclaimed by the owner for a period of five years. The property falls under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Unclaimed Property Act. Through "Cash Dash", a program sponsored by Treasurer Topinka's Office, Illinois residents can search for their unclaimed property that is listed via the Cash Dash database online.
Generally, the types of unclaimed property include safe deposit box contents, unclaimed wages, un-cashed checks and paid-up life insurance policies. Unclaimed assets have been turned over to the State by corporations, partnerships, financial institutions, federal, state and local governments, utilities and charitable organizations after they were unable to locate the owner.
While over $271 million has been returned to Illinois residents, the state has more than $990 million left to be claimed in lost or forgotten assets, and almost one in five people may have something to claim. Visit www.cashdash.net to conduct a free search or call 312-814-1700 for more information.
