Enthusiasm to continue between young professionals, Convention attendees
To help keep the excitement among young professionals at its 83rd Annual Convention, the Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) is once again intentionally welcoming young professionals to be part of this premiere event.

This initiative is a spinoff of the League’s inaugural effort to attract young professionals to Convention last year in partnership with The Cooperative Trust (formerly The Crash Network).  With the success of hosting last year’s group of "crashers", ICUL is continuing that tradition given that most credit union employees under 30 have limited or no access to networking, professional development and/or growth opportunities.

The idea behind hosting a group of young professionals is to create a low-cost event within and alongside ICUL’s major credit union conferences, such as its convention.
An application process open to young professionals age 30 and younger took place last month to determine the lucky recipients.  The young professionals who will be attending include:
  • Aaron M. Heldt, Marketing Specialist, NuMark Credit Union (Joliet);
  • Abby Munz, Member Service Representative, Blackhawk Area Credit Union (Savanna);
  • Ashley Miller, Member Service Representative, Members First Community Credit Union (Quincy);
  • Brooke N. Stuart, Member Service Representative, Advantage One Credit Union (Morrison);
  • Christina McAuliffe, Manager, Milledgeville Community Credit Union (Milledgeville);
  • Jared Koehler, Marketing & Operations, NIU Employees Federal Credit Union (DeKalb);
  • Jennifer Kulkoski, Director of Marketing & Innovation, First Financial Credit Union (Chicago);
  • Karalee Misner, Business Development Manager, Land of Lincoln Credit Union (Decatur);
  • Karina Lueck, Member Relations Supervisor, Baxter Credit Union (Vernon Hills);
  • Mandy Wolfe, Marketing Representative, CommonWealth Credit Union (Bourbonnais);
  • Nathan Jenkins, Marketing Coordinator/Accounting, Tee Pak Credit Union (Danville);
  • Parease Alexander, Financial Service Representative, Maroon Financial Credit Union (Chicago);
  • Porsha Winters, Member Service Representative, First Financial Credit Union (Chicago);
  • Shanna Wemhoener, Teller, Members “First” Community Credit Union (Quincy); and
  • Sundeep Patel, Business Development, Bensenville Credit Union (Bensenville).
Sponsored by ICUL, this program will give young credit union professionals the opportunity to participate in the event by attending the full convention as well as additional mentor sessions with industry thought leaders each day and building relationships with other young credit union professionals.  After a welcome on Thursday prior to the Annual Convention kick-off, several other sessions, a lunch and a special offsite dinner will be held for this group.

"We are excited to once again be hosting a group of young professionals at our Convention to help provide a significant opportunity to foster their professional growth and networking within the credit union movement," said Gregory Framarin, ICUL Director of Educational Development.

To be held April 18 – 20, 2013, ICUL’s 83rd Annual Convention to be held for the second year at the Renaissance Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, which is host to many amenities, including a mecca of world-class shopping options, including Woodfield Mall, and upscale dining.  The League has worked out a deal with the hotel to offer low-cost rooms for the young professionals group, who will also be responsible for their transportation to Schaumburg and meals.

The event officially kicks off at 4:00 p.m. on the 18th with the exhibit hall grand opening, where more than 80 business partners and other vendors are anticipated to be on display.  The theme is “Passport to Success!”  Mark Sievewright will provide keynote remarks at the 83rd Annual Convention.  Sievewright's keynote topic will be "How the Future of Credit Unions will evolve in the Next 20 Years." He will also present a breakout session, "Competing to Win:  Seven Strategies for Seven Trends in U.S. Financial Services."  Other speaker highlights will include Bill Hampel, Credit Union National Association Chief Economist.  In addition, attendees will enjoy the hits of Neil Diamond from the Denny Diamond Tribute Band.  The band will perform during the Chairman's Reception on Friday evening of Convention.

CUNA GAC a huge success
Nearly 70 Illinois Credit union activists turned out for this year’s CUNA GAC, which concluded on February 28th.

Participants were treated to a spectacular array of speaker and break-out sessions during the event.  Of particular note for Illinois participants, Don Edwards was honored by CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney with Don’s introduction into the Credit Union Hall of Leaders and his nearly 40 years of service to the credit union movement.  He retired March 1, 2013.

At the opening general session Cheney presented a bold new, overarching strategic vision for the credit union movement: A vision in which "Americans choose credit unions as their best financial partner."  Outlining this strategic vision, and how credit unions can "Unite for Good" to achieve it, was the focus of the CUNA leader's remarks to the 4,200 CUNA GAC participants.  Details of this powerful message
can be found here.

Furthermore, at a special GAC awards ceremony, Rock Valley Credit Union and Streator Onized Credit Union were presented with first and second place national Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service awards, respectively.

During the conference, Keith Sias was a panelist on a break out session entitled: "Taxation a 2 Front War" that was attended by over 400 conference participants!

The major topics discussed at the GAC included the threat of taxation and an update on key legislation.  These core issues as well as support materials were left at each Hill Visit that was an integral part of the GAC. Please check
CUNA's Web site for briefing materials on taxation and our key bills.

Congress will return home the last week of March and first week of April for Easter recess.  This is a great time to schedule in-District visits. Please contact Pat Huffman for more information.

Legislative Day, other May Springfield events scheduled, open for registration
It will once again be a busy time for the League and credit unions in the state capitol at the end of April and in early May.

That's because first, ICUL's annual Legislative Day and Reception will be held on May 1.  This important annual event will be held at a new location: the Springfield Hilton Hotel.

"With more than 40 members new to the Illinois General Assembly, now is the time for political involvement. This year’s State Legislative Day and Reception will focus on the key role that credit unions can play in the political process. By joining and working together, we can make a difference that matters -- to every credit union member and the entire credit union movement," said Steve Olson, ICUL Executive Vice President, General Counsel and COO.

The meeting format of Legislative Day will once again feature registration at 9:30 a.m. and include a luncheon, allowing for a better opportunity for legislative visits.  Please also plan to take advantage of the Legislative Reception as a great opportunity to socialize with your legislator.

Please also take note about additional events taking place that week.  The 3rd annual Springfield-area CUPAC golf outing will take place on April 30 – one day prior to ICUL’s State Legislative Day. The golf outing will take place at Edgewood Golf Club in Auburn, Illinois (approximately 30 minutes south of Springfield). Separate registration is required using the CUPAC Golf Outing brochure.

Lastly, please mark your calendar for now to stay around on May 2, the day after Legislative Day, for a board college being hosted by the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors (NASCUS).  A similar event was held as part of its annual conference held in Chicago last year and was well attended and received by Illinois credit unions.

For more information on these events, please see the event brochures and/or call ICUL's Springfield office at (217) 744-1800.
