ICUL elects Peter Paulson as 40th Chairman
Pete Paulson, CEO, Corporate America Family Credit Union, was sworn in as ICUL's 40th Chairman during Convention.

Paulson, from the Fox Valley Chapter of Credit Unions, serves as the Class D At Large Director for District 3 and has been on the League board since 2003.  During that time, Paulson has also participated on the annual convention and executive committees.  He was also on the LSC board for four years.  Paulson will additionally serve as LSC Chairman.

"It brings me much pride to be standing before you as the newest Chairman of the Illinois Credit Union League.  I would like to thank the board of directors for their confidence in electing me to this position.   As Chairman, I will do my best to insure the continued viability of the credit union movement," said Paulson.  "I have been a League director for ten years and part of the credit union movement for nearly 30 years.  I would not be here today without the support of Corporate America Family Credit Union and the Fox Valley Chapter board.  I look forward to working with all of you and leading the Illinois Credit Union League."

Plauda honored with several tributes
It might not be easy to sum up 37 years of service, including 30 as CEO, but the League and Illinois credit unions have been working very hard to provide Dan Plauda with much deserved recognition for his many years of service and dedication.

The League's recent Annual Convention provided the means for the board of directors, credit unions, and League staff to show very meaningful gratitude to Dan.  This included a tribute by outgoing ICUL Chairman Geri Burek at the Delegates' meeting.

"Because of your guidance, I am a better credit union executive - and I am sure many, many others can testify that Dan has done the same for them. Dan, you have been a great friend and mentor and it has been an honor and pleasure to work side-by-side with you for all these years.  So on behalf of the board of directors, the credit unions of Illinois and the System staff, I just want to say thank you for your friendship and your leadership," said Burek.

In addition, there were two opportunities that paid homage to Dan at the Awards ceremony.  This included an ICU Foundation Perpetual Tribute Award in his name, and a surprise induction into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame.  Each of these occurrences praised and honored Dan for his numerous accomplishments, including establishing the ICU Foundation, initiating ICUL's major conferences that we know today, and overseeing important legislative battles, such as the recodification of the Illinois Credit Union Act.

The Hall of Fame induction was also administered by Burek, who reflected, "Dan is a real life example of someone who has given his all, and by doing so, has achieved what he sought - a positive future for the credit unions of Illinois.  As a fitting tribute, we are so very pleased to honor him this morning with induction into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame."

Last but certainly not least, CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney, who served as the Convention Keynote speaker, presented a framed resolution on behalf of the CUNA board of directors at the Chairman's reception.  Also during the reception, Dick Ensweiler, the previous ICUL President (and now President of the Cornerstone Credit Union League) who originally hired Dan, also provided congratulatory remarks at the reception.

After each of these tributes, Dan was greeted with a standing ovation.

"You will be missed, but you will always be remembered as the one who made us who we are today," concluded Burek

Election of officers for the Illinois Credit Union (ICU) Foundation, Credit Union Political Action Council (CUPAC) and Illinois Youth Involvement Council (IYIC) also took place at ICUL's 84th Annual Convention.

In addition, CUPAC re-elected its officers at its annual meeting.  Officers elected to one year terms included: Brenda Crane, COO, Credit Union 1, as Chairman; Pete Fauth, Vice President/CFO, Financial Plus Credit Union, as Vice Chairman; Brian Cedergren, CEO, Abri Credit Union, as Treasurer; and RaeAnn Love, CEO, Commonwealth Credit Union, as Secretary.

Social media vital to credit union advocacy
If you are a social media user, the League wants you to be part of the online conversation!

As you may already know, CUNA, leagues, credit unions, and their members have been significantly engaged in defending the movement's tax exempt status and social media has been a critical piece to our success.  To that end, the Illinois League has been very active in building its social media audience as well, specifically via Twitter, to engage lawmakers and others in learning about the credit union difference.

If you are a Twitter user, be sure to follow @IllinoisLeague and we will follow you as well. If you are not already online, it's very easy to get started.  Contact William Wille, ICUL PR Coordinator for assistance.
