OGC hosts successful Attorneys’ Conference
The League’s Office of General Counsel held the 35th rendition of its annual Attorneys’ Conference on September 14 - 15, a very beneficial event for attorneys that represent credit unions and other financial institutions, as well as their compliance officers.

This two-day conference was held once again at the Hyatt Lodge Hotel in Oak Brook, as part of the picturesque campus of the McDonald’s Corporation headquarters.  Following a welcome by Stephen Olson, ICUL Executive Vice President, General Counsel & COO, the agenda included timely presentations by fellow attorneys on the subject matters of consumer banking, commercial lending, ethics (attorney technology and social media; and Illinois issues), and residential real estate deeds.

As part of the second day, Olson also facilitated dialogue on an update about the Illinois legislative arena, including Credit Union Act amendments, collections: debtor prisons, debt buyers & collateral recovery, power of attorney exclusions, and foreclosures / abandoned property.  ICUL Associate General Counsel Carol Bertoux closed out the conference with an open forum to provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss matters of mutual interest.

"The Attorneys’ Conference is a very important way for the League to help expand the base of knowledge and understanding relative to laws, regulations and judicial decisions that directly impact the operations of credit unions," said Olson.  "It is our intention for this event to provide opportunities for both attorneys and individuals dealing with compliance to utilize the latest updates and information back at their financial institutions."

Tell us what you're doing for International CU Day!
The message is simple, direct and embraces the key concept behind credit unions: Members Matter Most. Those three words, which comprise this year's International Credit Union (ICU) Day® theme, speak to the heart of the credit union philosophy.

"In the face of all challenges, credit unions have always existed to serve their members," said Brian Branch, World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) President and CEO. "The clear and simple message, 'Members Matter Most,' summarizes credit unions' reason for being."

ICU Day, celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October, takes place this year on Oct. 18, 2012. This year is also the United Nations' International Year of Cooperatives, a year-long celebration that began Oct. 31, 2011, and has provided greater visibility to credit unions and other cooperatives worldwide.

This year's theme was submitted by Sinéad Butler from the Marketing Services Department of the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU). 'Members Matter Most' was one of more than a dozen themes submitted by representatives from Abacus Australian Mutuals, Credit Union Central of Canada, Credit Union National Association (USA) and WOCCU.

Committee members also voted on the design of this year's ICU Day poster, which incorporates photos of credit union members from Mexico, Poland, Tanzania and other countries from around the world. The seven cooperative principles in English, Spanish and French form the poster's background.

"Members are the heart of the credit union system. This year's theme speaks perfectly to the sentiment all staff carry through on every day," said Bill Cheney, CUNA President and CEO. "Further, it differentiates credit unions from other financial institutions as member-owned financial cooperatives. At credit unions, members matter most."

Official ICU Day graphics are available to download on WOCCU's Web site at www.woccu.org/icuday. Promotional materials and other ideas to help celebrate International Credit Union Day are also available.

Plan now to join other CU execs/activists for 2013 CUNA GAC
Although the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) is still months away, we wanted to be sure you know this event will be held February 24-28, 2013.

As you know, as the largest and most impactful credit union conference, CUNA GAC is the one event that all credit unions should attend.  This year’s event will focus on the challenges and opportunities for credit unions presented by the agenda of the soon-to-be elected 113th Congress.

Join other champions of the credit union movement and help us demonstrate to our newly elected and veteran representatives how our commitment to our members makes credit unions different from other financial institutions.  The GAC is the credit union movement’s premier political event and its largest national conference.  The theme for the 2013 GAC is Powerful Cause. Positive Effect.

"It is important for credit unions to have a strong presence on Capitol Hill.  It is especially powerful when local constituents go to Washington, D.C.," said Dan Plauda, ICUL President/Chief Executive Officer.  "Our political success over the years has been due in large part to organized events to educate lawmakers about credit unions.  These Hill events are opportunities for attendees to visit their federal lawmakers to maintain a strong political and regulatory future."

We appreciate your continued support and participation in our programs.  We look forward to seeing you in Washington!
