ICUL hosts critical follow up SAS workshops
As a follow up to successful "Lunch and Learn" meetings held in 2011, the Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) hosted a round of additional small asset size (SAS) workshops for credit unions under $25 million in assets this winter.

These programs, dedicated to driving financial health and member growth by providing SAS credit unions the tools they need to reach success, were hosted this winter in Springfield, Kankakee, and DeKalb. The meetings featured a variety of roundtable topics shared by the Illinois Division of Financial Institutions (DFI), National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), CUNA Mutual Group, Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union and others, including information on non-interest income, regulatory concerns, ACH compliance, and marketing.

"In continuing our critical dialogue with small credit unions, we wanted to offer a unique opportunity for them to gain industry knowledge and put it to work right away in their shops," said Joni Senkpeil, ICUL director of small credit union development.  "If there’s one thing that stands out in our industry, it’s the ease in which small credit unions share and learn from each other and the value that comes from this unique quality that our industry possesses."

The League previously launched the "Lunch and Learn" workshop series in 2011 via a new Small Asset Size (SAS) Advisory Group exclusively for credit unions under $25 million in assets as part of a statewide action plan for SAS credit unions in Illinois.  During this phase, a total of six of the lunchtime meetings were hosted to provide an overview of compliance and regulatory hot topics, and which changes are on the way; network with peers, build relationships and hear industry "best practices"; and gain first-hand insight from key industry regulators.

This on-going effort is a coordinated and collaborative endeavor to study small credit union challenges, offer resourceful solutions, and help secure the strength of its small credit union community.  As its first order of business, the advisory group was charged to create a plan that will provide a necessary and unique opportunity for credit unions to shape distinct and permanent SAS workgroups across Illinois.  It includes four priorities for action, including: reducing the regulatory and compliance burden; promoting collaboration; enhancing communication; and increasing competitiveness.

The League has also hosted on an annual basis an SAS conference since 2002.  The two-day, highly popular conference provides a unique educational event to address challenges and concerns of credit unions in this particular asset group, as well as ample time for attendees to network and share best practices.  Nearly 90 people normally attend this conference.

"The existence of a viable, healthy small credit union community is not only vital to the financial well being of the members they serve, but also to the political and cooperative strength of the entire movement," said Dan Plauda, ICUL President/Chief Executive Officer.  "With these credit unions comprising 70 percent of all affiliates in the state, we want to make sure they are getting additional information and resources needed to survive in our highly competitive and constantly changing environment."

Will we see you for the 2013 CUNA GAC?

As you know, as the largest and most impactful credit union conference, CUNA GAC is the one event that all credit unions should attend.  This year’s event, to be held February 24-28, 2013, will focus on the challenges and opportunities for credit unions presented by the agenda of the 113th Congress.

Join other champions of the credit union movement and help us demonstrate to our newly elected and veteran representatives how our commitment to our members makes credit unions different from other financial institutions.  The GAC is the credit union movement’s premier political event and its largest national conference.  The theme for the 2013 GAC is Powerful Cause. Positive Effect.

"It is important for credit unions to have a strong presence on Capitol Hill.  It is especially powerful when local constituents go to Washington, D.C.," said Dan Plauda, ICUL President/Chief Executive Officer.  "Our political success over the years has been due in large part to organized events to educate lawmakers about credit unions.  These Hill events are opportunities for attendees to visit their federal lawmakers to maintain a strong political and regulatory future."

We appreciate your continued support and participation in our programs.  We look forward to seeing you in Washington!
