Chester "Chet" Urban Memorial (2000)
During his lifetime, Chester F. Urban served credit unions for more than 50 years. Chet began his credit union career as volunteer treasurer for the Illinois Zinc Employees Federal Credit Union in 1946. During these years, Chet was active in the Tri-County Chapter. In fact, he held every chapter office.
In 1963, Chet became the first professional treasurer and manager of Illiana Financial (previously known as Illiana Federal) Credit Union. He opened its first small office. Two years later, he left the credit union to join the Illinois Credit Union League as a field representative. He retired from the League in 1983, after serving as assistant managing director and vice president of credit union development.
Chet didn’t retire from credit unions, though. He went back to work for Illiana as SEG director and added more than 300 small companies to the field of membership. Chet was also a representative to the World Council of Credit Unions; he was assigned to facilitate financial improvement for troubled credit unions in Bermuda.
Chet was a wonderful example of “people helping people,” and was well loved and respected throughout the credit union movement. Gifts from family, friends and local credit unions established this award.
