Charlie Thompson Memorial (2011)
Charlie Thompson began his credit union career in 1946 as assistant manager at the C.M.St.P.&P. Credit Union (now Blackhawk Area CU), following his discharge from the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II. He later became the credit union’s treasurer/manager.
Charlie was hired by League Managing Director, William Brietzke in 1958, as a field representative responsible for servicing 130 credit unions in four chapters. He was responsible for not only assisting these credit unions, but also for teaching bookkeeping skills and organizing new credit unions. Charlie helped organize more than 100 credit unions during his time as a field rep. At the time, Illinois and California were in a race to see which state would have the greatest number of credit unions.
Charlie held a variety of positions at the League during his 29-year tenure, including Director of Field Services, Director of Research & Information, and Vice President and Chief Operating Officer/Credit Union Development.
Charlie was a truly unique individual who brought dignity, wisdom, knowledge and an ironic wit to all that he did. He was a devoted husband to Mildred and their adopted son Brett. Charlie passed away in November 2010 but his dedication and commitment to credit unions, their ideals, and his friends and family will never be forgotten.
Gifts from friends and former co-workers established the Charlie Thompson Memorial Award in his name.
